What is the proper mount and screws for my Savage Centerfire Rifle?

Not sure what Savage Rifle or screws size you have?  Use the link below for guidance on determining what Savage centerfire rifle you may have and what screw size you have. How To Find The Right Bases For A Savage Centerfire Rifle

Note: Please verify screw size. Savage AccuTrigger rifle actions have both 6-48 with most newer rifles now being manufactured with 8-40 screws. Savage Ultralight and Timberline centerfire models require 8-40 screws.

Screw Hole Size

Savage centerfire rifles use #6-48 or #8-40 screws and there are a few ways to determine the screw hole size on your rifle in order to find the right base.

Method 1: Measure the Screws

If you have a set of screws that fit, measure them with a pair of calipers. #6-48 screws will measure approximately 0.138”. #8-40 screws will measure approximately 0.164”.

Method 2: Hex Wrench Fit

If the plugs and screws are removed or missing from the receiver, test fit a 1/8” hex wrench in the screw holes. If the 1/8” hex wrench fits, it’s a #8-40 screw hole. If the hex wrench does not fit, it’s a #6-48 screw hole.

Method 3: Model Name

Click here for a list of Models that use 8-40 Screws

Long Action .440″ .860″ 4.635″ .860″ 7.39″ 2.5oz.

1 The height is measured at hole 1; from the top of the action to the top of the rail.

2 Hole 1 is closest to the shooter and hole 4 is closest to the muzzle. Hole spacing measured center to center.

Torque Recommendations?

  • Savage Picatinny Rail to Action: Torque can depend on the receiver. Please check with the rifle manufacturer (Savage)  to verify allowable torque into receiver. Always make sure your torque wrench is calibrated, Talley Mfg is not responsible for damage caused to scopes or firearms due to over torquing

Should I use Loctite when mounting my Savage Picatinny Rail?

  • Although not always necessary, using Loctite for the screws going in the receiver is perfectly fine. We do not recommend using anything stronger than Loctite Blue 242. We do not recommend using Loctite on the ring screws. Always test fit before applying any Loctite.
